Christmas Season 2020 In Melbourne
Enjoy a whole month of Christmas trees, lights, carols, and delicious food in Melbourne!
When the Christmas season comes to Melbourne, the city turns into a winter fairy tale, although in fact, it's summer in Melbourne! December will surprise you with all sorts of festivities from Christmas Festival to traditional Christmas markets across the city.
Be dazzled by the Christmas Projections (9pm to 11pm, 27 November to 25 December)-
Melbourne’s famous Christmas projections are a favourite with everyone. Stroll Swanston Street after dark to see State Library Victoria, Melbourne Town Hall and Princes Bridge light up with enchanting displays. There’s a special thank you to the city’s COVID-19 heroes that will have you feeling all the emotions.
-Fed Square Christmas (November 27–December 25, 2020)-
Federation Square is the central place of the holiday where a Christmas tree is put up every year and where theatrical musical performances take place. You can also meet Koorie Klaus, an Indigenous version of the internationally known Santa Klaus. Check out the very first North Pole University, and if you prefer to stay home, join a virtual Christmas workshop, which will be live-streamed from Deakin Edge Theatre. Christmas wonderland at Fed Square also lures visitors to Sky Castle—an interactive sound-and-light installation of inflatable arches that bring colorful symphony across the square.
Visit the Myer Christmas Windows (14 November to 24 December)-
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to the Bourke Street Mall to see the iconic Myer windows. Now in its 65th year, the nostalgic 2020 display revisits characters from the past 25 years.
Go on a Magical Christmas Quest-
Each Friday in December, look for five new clues posted on the Christmas Festival website. Then challenge the kids to set off on a Magical Christmas Quest. They’ll have to navigate through laneways and arcades to find the answers, and see the city in a whole new way. There’s prizes including weekly $250 city retailer vouchers to win.
Try on Santa’s Spectacles-
Santa’s Spectacles is a new Augmented Reality experience that takes you to the North Pole. Use your smartphone to scan Melbourne landmarks. Then behold as ice-skating penguins, cheeky elves and Santa himself pops up before your eyes! Look for information at Fed Square, Bourke Street Mall and State Library Victoria.
Carols by Candlelight (December 24, 2020; virtual event)-
On the evening of December 24, the famous Christmas concert Carols by Candlelight (carols with candles) is held in Sidney Myer Music Bowl in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Starting in the evening, people light millions of candles and sing their favorite Christmas songs, carols, and listen to performances by popular Australian artists, famous television characters, and local choirs. The 2020 edition is different due to public health considerations. There will be the show broadcast on Channel 9. For a carol sing-along, you can also turn on the 3AW and Vision Australia Radio.
